Study Guide | Philippians 2.12-18

Hi friends,

Here is this week's study guide on Philippians 2.12-18. In it Paul, the great Apostle to the Gentiles, reveals the profound calling of disciples of Jesus Christ: That we not retreat into a holy enclave separated from the world, but instead "shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold out (and hold onto) to the word of life."

This is the result of "working out our salvation with fear and trembling." Notice: It's not working "on" our salvation, working "in" our salvation, or - worse of all - working "for" our salvation! God forbid we confuse how this whole thing works! It's working "out" what God has worked in: saving us by grace through faith. As Paul writes in Philippians 3.12-14:

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me... I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

May we too - not only as individuals, but as a community - also "press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of us"!

As always, if you have any questions about the study guide, I - along with Pastors Jim and Paul - would be honored to talk with you. Feel free to contact us at any time.

I look forward to worshiping with you this weekend. See you Saturday at 5, or Sunday morning at 8:45 or 10:30. May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
Curtis
